Keynote by Hartmut Rosa "Dinge ent-sorgen. Wie der Kapitalismus das Ende des Privateigentums an Konsumgütern erzwingt"

Hartmut Rosa will give a public lecture on the disposal of our property in turbo-capitalism. It will take place on June 27 at 7 p.m. at the Town Hall of Erfurt. The lecture can also be attended online via livestream.

Two new books will be published in the SFB series on June 19: Nach dem Privateigentum? by Silke van Dyk, Tilman Reitz and Hartmut Rosa and Leben auf Kredit by Felix Krämer.

Yann Schosser and Max Huschke (A06) give a lecture as part of the lecture series “Understanding Freedom. Challenges and Perspectives in a Liberal Society” at the HTWK Leipzig. The title of the lecture is: “The real villain of our time. Kant and libertarianism.” The lecture will take place on Wednesday, June 26th. from 5:15 p.m. to 6:45 p.m.

This is what the lecture is about: Freedom legitimizes property as well as criticism of it. How freedom justifies property, why in this context a key figurehead of the US right finds Kant worse than Marx, what that says about them and Kant, why property is actually social, what that has to do with the Big Bang, a parking lot and Ironman has – we want to clarify all of this in our lecture.

New publication!

Silke van Dyk (C04) writes about private property as a privilege in her new publication in the journal Aus Politik und Zeitgeschichte (APuZ). Private property feigns individual merit and thus conceals the fact that many have contributed to it. The SFB co-spokesperson sees more public infrastructure as a solution.

New podcast episode Appropriate!

In the new podcast episode of the SFB podcast Appropriate, Clara Salazar talks about the history and concept of ejidos (collective forms of land ownership), which were introduced by the Mexican Revolution in 1917. This episode is the forth part of “The Urban Lives of Property Series”.

New publication

Carsten Herrmann-Pillath (C01) has published a new book entitled "Embodiment, Political Economy and Human Flourishing. An Embodied Cognition Approach to Economic Life". In the publication, questions of property are raised and negotiated in connection with money and labour, among other things.

A new blog series on urban property conflicts in Europe and local struggles for self-governance in East and West has been published. In the seven parts of the series "Urban property conflicts in Europe, East and West: A blog series on local struggles for self-governance”, various authors write about I the history of the German socialisation movement, II property conflicts in Polish urban development, III the reshaping of property rights and urban governance in Barcelona and Naples, IV the discourse on expropriation claims of housing, V the confrontation of property relations with the socialist legacy,VI post-neoliberal cities as an alternative, and VII self-governance as community control.

Verena Wolf (JRT01) writes in the new post of the SFB blog about the role of private property in causing the climate crisis. She addresses the global inequality in CO2 emissions and shows that owning private property results in more carbon emissions. This leads her to the question of the extent to which planetary boundaries determine the ownership of private property.

Helen Gibson has published a new article titled “Granny Midwives’ Epistemic and Embodied Care”. The article is part of the open access edited volume “Herausforderung Solidariät. Konzepte–Kontroversen–Perspektiven” written by Kerstin Schmidt and Joost van Loon.

Stefan Schmalz (sub-project JRT02) and Klaus Dörre (sub-project B05) are interviewed by Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk (MDR) as experts on the dispute between owners and trade unions following the takeover by Chinese investors of companies in Germany. The interviewees discuss the differing views of the Chinese owners and the German labour unionists.

Felix Krämer presented his book “Leben auf Kredit. Menschen, Macht und Schulden in den USA vom Ende der Sklaverei bis in die Gegenwart” at the final symposium of a BMBF project by Grit Grigoleit-Richter entitled “Intersecting Inequalities: Race, Gender, and Capitalism in the U.S. Welfare State”.

The book will be published in the series of the Collaborative Research Centre Structural Change of Property, which can now also be found on our website under publications.
 

New publication!

Marco Sonnberger, Alena Bleicher and Matthias Groß have published the completely revised and expanded edition of the Handbook of Environmental Sociology. Whether on the topic of sustainability, questions of environmental justice or postcolonial perspectives on environmental research, the topic of property is present in various ways throughout the volume.

MEINS?! Strukturwandel des Eigentums – Literature meets Science

The first event in our series on questions of property in literature will take place on January 23 at the Jena Theaterhaus. Felix Lee will read from his novel "China, mein Vater und ich" and discuss with sociologist Stefan Schmalz the social changes in China and how the idea and reality of property have changed as a result. Petra Gümplová has published a new post on the International Law Blog. The post “Continental Shelf and the Quiet Ocean Commons Grab” provides a critical analysis of the recent U.S. continental shelf expansion, placing it within the broader context of global trends in continental shelf claims and raising important questions about justice, governance, and environmental sustainability in the management of marine resources.

Bettina Hollstein and Amelie Stuart have published a new issue of the Zeitschrift für Wirtschafts- und Unternehmensethik (zfwu). The title is: “Strukturwandel des Eigentums - wirtschaftsethische Herausforderung oder Chance?” and is issue 3/2023.

Carsten Herrmann-Pillath has published a new article in real-world economics review. The title of the article is: “Sharing planet Earth: overcoming speciesism in economics”.

In this article, the author looks at the rights of nature and how these relate to economic growth and the threat of climate catastrophe.

Klaus Dörre, Steffen Liebig and Kim Lucht, together with Johanna Sittel, have published an article in the Berlin Journal of Sociology.

In “Klasse gegen Klima? Transformationskonflikte in der Autoindustrie”, the authors deal with the social effects of ecological dangers, especially climate change, and emphasise that these dangers do not eliminate social inequalities, but rather reinforce them. The lack of consideration of social classes in ecological education means that measures against climate change come up against social barriers. The socio-ecological transformation is seen as conflictual, and the article empirically examines how management and labour in the automotive industry in Germany deal with these changes.

New publication

Jacob Blumenfeld has published a new book entitled “The Concept of Property in Kant, Fichte, and Hegel Freedom, Right, and Recognition”.

This book provides a detailed account of the role of property in German Idealism. It puts the concept of property in the center of the philosophical systems of Kant, Fichte, and Hegel and shows how property remains tied to their conceptions of freedom, right, and recognition.

Carsten Herrmann-Pillath has published a guest article in the Frankfurter Rundschau on “Sondervermögen Klima - jetzt!”. In this article, he addresses the millennium challenge of coping with climate change and mistakes that have been made in the past, as well as a possible solution for the future.
